A beehive makes honey by having thousands of bees fly around and collect nectar from flowers. By working together, all the bees in the community get to enjoy some delicious honey. Hivemapper makes maps of the world by having thousands of people work together. When people do things to help make the map better, they get a token called HONEY. A token is something that you can trade for other things that you want. HONEY tokens are good to have because you can trade them for Hivemapper’s useful map data. How to get involved in the Hivemapper community: By working together as one global beehive, we are building the world's best map. It's a map by the people, for the people, fairly rewarding everyone who helped to build it. Happy mapping! People do all kinds of things to help build the map. Some people use special cameras to take pictures of the world while they drive. Some people look at those pictures and teach computers what humans know about the world. This is called being an . A computer system called Map AI does lots of automatic work to build the map, using the skills it learned from people. By working together, all of the people in the community get to share the fruit of their work: a fresh and detailed map of the world. Anyone can open the and see which roads are being mapped. There are tools called that help people use the data to build cool maps and apps. Hivemapper's tokens are digital. They were made on a "blockchain." To understand how a blockchain works, imagine a book on the internet that anyone can read. But people can do more than read the book. They can also write a page in the book. And whenever anyone writes a page, everyone else can read it. A blockchain works the same way for token trades. Hivemapper uses a blockchain called that can handle trades quickly and cheaply, which is important for a busy beehive. Drive and map with a . Play games to help our Map AI improve. Map with your and report real-time issues like road work. Follow along on to watch the map grow. Build on top of network level data to build cool maps and apps. With so many cameras in the world already, many people ask: “Why did Hivemapper design and build its own dashcams? Why can’t I use my smartphone?” The project team tested smartphones and off-the-shelf dashcams for an early prototype, and learned they were unfortunately not suited to collecting high-quality map data. This blog post includes details. As the saying goes, “people who are really serious about software should make their own hardware.” That's why we developed the **Open Camera (aka “ODC”)** specification, which includes the hardware and software required for all supported dashcams to operate on the Hivemapper Network. This includes a stack of technology that includes: 1. ODC Hardware 2. ODC Firmware 3. ODC API Software [](#odc-hardware) ODC Hardware ----------------------------------- Hivemapper Inc. built the first three ODC-compliant devices, the **Hivemapper Dashcam,** **Hivemapper Dashcam S,** and the [**Hivemapper Bee**](https://bee.hivemapper.com) **.** However, other manufacturers are able to build devices that meet ODC specifications. Third-party hardware manufacturers with the resources and capabilities to support large-scale production of high-quality consumer electronics are encouraged to develop their own compliant devices. Ever since our ancestors started painting on cave walls, humans have used maps to share what we learn about our world. Mapmaking technologies have rapidly improved over the past few decades, making it easy for anyone with a smartphone to learn about the world around them. * around the world now use mapping apps every day. * Millions of businesses use and pay for maps and mapping APIs. * 1.5B vehicles are steadily adding automated driving features that require map data. Today's standard mapmaking techniques, such as deploying dedicated vehicles to collect road-level imagery, are incredibly expensive. As a result, mapmaking is consolidated among the few companies with the capital to map roads at global scale. Even their maps lack the freshest data. [](#networked-not-crowdsourced) The Problems We’re Solving --------------------------------------------------------------- 1. **Uneven coverage and freshness** - Typical methods of collecting map data are very expensive, so even the best-funded companies struggle to refresh maps at global scale. 3. **Expensive for businesses** \- Millions of businesses pay to integrate maps into their products. With so few choices for reliable maps, monopoly pricing makes map data unaffordable. 4. **Today's maps don't understand the "why"** \- When cars start to travel at 10 mph on a road they normally travel at 40 mph, modern maps don't know if this is due to road construction, a minor fender-bender or a severe crash that will take hours to clear. Even when a user reports an issue through an app, they cannot immediately trust the report without imagery. 5. **Data without rewards** \- Modern mapmaking relies on large amounts of user-generated data. Many mapmakers collect location data and imagery from users without compensating them. In many cases, these companies are not transparent about how user data is being used. The design of the Hivemapper Network helps to address all problems. [](#networked-not-crowdsourced-1) Hivemapper’s Approach ------------------------------------------------------------ The Hivemapper Network is designed from the ground up to be: * **Permissionless** \- Anybody, anywhere can contribute to the Hivemapper Network or consume data from it, as long as they adhere to basic rules. They do not need permission to do so. * **Rewards-based** - Contributors to the global map receive HONEY, Hivemapper’s token, which allows them to share the economic benefits of map development. [](#networked-not-crowdsourced-2) App Developers ----------------------------------------------------- Anybody can build applications on top of the Hivemapper Network. High-quality maps are crucial to the transportation and logistics industries, as well as real estate, utilities, and government. Analysts estimate the mapping industry has a market size of, including mapping apps and APIs, geospatial analytics, GIS, and map data collection. And yet, most roads are driven every day. In the United States alone, 3.26 trillion miles in 2022, or 8.9 billion miles per day. So why can’t we collect the map data as a community? The Hivemapper Network, launched in November 2022, is an open, global, and decentralized mapping network that uses AI to build a map from the driving we do everyday. Thanks to its vibrant contributor community, the Hivemapper Network millions of kilometers of road-level imagery every week. **Fresher maps for autonomous and** **driving -** Today's maps were made for humans. The maps required by autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles require far fresher data. Hivemapper contributors can help build the map by collecting high-quality, street-level imagery with . They can also play games to edit the map and improve machine learning models. In return for their efforts, contributors are rewarded with a digital token called that can be redeemed to access map data. This model allows the economic benefits of the global mapping network to be shared with the people who build the map. **Decentralized** \- This helps the Hivemapper Network to remain fair and open. Along with engaged members of the community, the will help maintain the and support an open-source ecosystem, including releasing source code and materials for hardware and software projects. The documentation in this repository is intended to help people learn how to contribute to the mapping network and how to consume Hivemapper data. These outputs should be public goods, managed by and for the community who built it. Although decentralized, an organized body with a clear mandate is required to govern and facilitate network operations. By transferring many key governance responsibilities to a foundation and open-sourcing the underlying technology, the Hivemapper Network will be best equipped to serve humanity. Over time, the foundation will take on many of the responsibilities currently held by employees of Bee Maps (Hivemapper Inc.), such as maintaining the [decentralized mapping network](/welcome/network-governance/open-camera) and its underlying mapping technology. No executives from Bee Maps can hold positions in the Hivemapper Foundation at the same time. Below are the anticipated structure and core responsibilities of the Hivemapper Foundation. Please contact [info@hivemapperfoundation.org](mailto:info@hivemapperfoundation.org) with questions. Category Description Mission To proliferate a fresh global map as a public good for humanity. (2) Establish a transparent process for making updates to the underlying protocol and formulas, as described below in the Map Improvement Proposals section. (3) Manage and maintain the open technologies supporting the network. Partnerships The foundation will work with hardware manufacturers to create compatible Open Dashcam devices and establish a certification process for approving new hardware devices. As established by [MIP-9](https://medium.com/hivemapper-foundation/map-improvement-proposal-9-mip-9-fe7ceb4e7bec) , the foundation will also fund grant programs for analysts who improve public-facing data resources. [](#map-improvement-proposals-mips) Map Improvement Proposals (MIPs) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Hivemapper Network uses a mechanism of governance called **Map Improvement Proposals** (also known as MIPs). Similar to the idea of BIPs from the Bitcoin community, MIPs will be used to introduce and approve or deny major changes to the Hivemapper Network. Changes introduced through MIPs may pertain to the network structure, governance, or token economics of HONEY. MIPs currently take the form of notice-and-comment rulemaking. First, an initial proposal is published on the Hivemapper Foundation [blog](https://medium.com/hivemapper-foundation) . Next, community input occurs on various social platforms, such as Discord. To complete the process, the proposal is either finalized, modified, or abandoned. In the longer term, we expect to implement more robust governance mechanisms that may include voting. Anyone with an idea for a MIP is encouraged to propose and vet ideas with the Hivemapper community via [Discord](https://discord.gg/the-official-hivemapper-community-715439007764316191) . This is a good way to see if there is support for the idea and if it’s been discussed before. Your personal information and location data are not the product. For this reason, the network has been designed to be private and anonymous, and to uphold the highest standards of data protection and privacy for both contributors and bystanders. You can find more information on the Hivemapper , a comprehensive portal that includes all the relevant information about privacy at Hivemapper, including: * Key aspects of data collection and data products generated from map imagery * A list of cities and countries where mapping collection is occurring each quarter * Hivemapper's current Here are some of the ways that the Hivemapper Network implements "privacy by design." ### [](#anonymous-usernames) Anonymous Usernames Hivemapper generates random three-word usernames to protect the identity of its contributors. Hivemapper asks its contributors not to share their usernames anywhere in order to shield their identities. This way, nobody knows who provided map coverage for a given location other than it was uploaded by a contributor with an anonymous username like “Pumping Grey Shoveler” or “Awesome Tomato Actor,” which is accessible in the Hivemapper app under the Settings tab. ### [](#we-dont-want-your-personal-information) We Don’t Want Your Personal Information The Hivemapper Network will never ask its contributors to share personal information such as passwords, , phone numbers, credit card numbers, or home addresses. All that’s necessary is the imagery you collect while you drive with your dashcam. Hivemapper will never ask for your personal information or sell it. ### [](#anonymized-location-data) Anonymized Location Data The collected location data in the is not associated with a username. Hivemapper doesn’t share your username or places you mapped, so no one will know your location unless you tell them. We use various means to verify your mapping data's location while allowing your contributions to remain anonymous. ### [](#trip-trimming) Trip Trimming The first 500 meters and the last 500 meters of a given trip are automatically discarded. A contributor can adjust this up to 1,000 meters. This feature cannot be disabled. ### [](#personal-privacy-zones) Personal Privacy Zones This feature enables a contributor to define specific geographic areas — be it around their home, workplace, or any other location — as zones where their dashcam will stop recording. Whenever the contributor’s dashcam enters a personal privacy zones, it automatically pauses data collection. This eliminates a contributor’s need to manually stop or disable the dashcam as they navigate spaces that they don’t want to map. Personal Privacy Zones are never shared with Hivemapper servers, and remain confidential only to the contributor. ### [](#network-privacy-zones) Network Privacy Zones Network Privacy Zones extends privacy to sensitive areas where everyone’s data collection will be paused. If a location such as a military base, nuclear power plant, or private industrial facility is designated as a Network Privacy Zone, the Hivemapper Network automatically blocks collection within that area. ### [](#opt-in-mapping) Opt-In Mapping In order to contribute to the map, you must opt-in. Follow the instructions on the screen **Tips for Capturing High-Quality Map Data** * Mount the Bee on the front windshield with a clear, unobstructed view of the road. Avoid areas with tint, black coatings, dot patterns, or interior accessories. * Do not block the driver’s view. Choose a safe, low-impact mounting spot. * Avoid tinted windows and minimize visibility of your vehicle’s interior in the frame. * Remove personal items from the dashboard—name tags, documents, or anything that could identify you. * Make sure the Bee is level—not pointed too far up at the sky or too far down at the hood. * If using AI event detection, follow the official Bee Placement and Detection Guidelines for best results. ### [](#mount-rating) **Mount Rating** Once you start driving with your Bee, you will be assigned a mount rating out of 4 stars. The mount rating grades how well your Bee dashcam mount conforms to the mount guidelines above. For users collecting rewards, ratings of 3 or 4 will receive full earned rewards while lower ratings will receive prorated amounts. You can view your mount rating in the Profile section of the Bee App or in the Network Explorer (link). To improve your mount rating, you may need to change your mount positioning or location. To check your mount, you can use the Mount Check feature in the Bee Maps app. [](#powering-up) Powering up --------------------------------- 1. Locate the 12 volt accessory outlet in your vehicle 2. Plug in the included outlet adaptor 3. Locate the power port on the underside of the Bee and plug in the other end of the cord. Tip: There are two USB-C outlets on the Bee, be sure the power cord is plugged into the one on the right labeled “Power” 4. The LED light near the power port: 1. Solid Red = power is good 2. No Red = no power 3. Breathing Red Flicker (over 4 seconds) = power is good 4. Short Red Flicker (1 second on 1 second) off = power mismatch and will not power 5. Quick Flicker (300ms on 300ms off) = short condition in Bee The Bee is designed to be powered using a 12 volt accessory outlet. While the Bee may be powered using a USB-C charging port, not all vehicles supply enough power to these ports to successfully power the Bee. The Bee accepts a maximum direct voltage of 20V, which is safely provided with the included power adapter. Some vehicles output more than 20V through accessory outlets. Damage to the Bee may occur if powered at greater than 20V. Reference your vehicle’s owner’s manual to confirm the voltage of your outlets and charging ports prior to installation. [](#led-lights-for-bee-lte) **LED Lights for Bee LTE** ----------------------------------------------------------- The two lights on the back should face inside the car, on the right side of the Bee. **Right (LTE):** Blue = uploading White = no LTE **Left (GPS):** Blue = GPS locked and mapping White = searching After setup, the Bee maps automatically when powered on. If the device is plugged in but the Power LED (right) is not illuminated, it is possible that power supply is insufficient from your power source. If the small LED next to the USB-C ports on the underside of Bee is flashing red, this indicates that power supply is insufficient. Use the included power adapter to ensure proper power supply. High-quality begins with great mount positions. There are currently two approved mount positions (as shown below). LTE upload** Uploading through LTE is one of the core features of the Bee LTE model. (a) You will a physical **nano** SIM card that has data enabled. (b) Your SIM must have an active data plan, below are the supported carriers by region Once you have an active SIM card, it’s time to authenticate: 1. While the Bee is off, insert the SIM card into the designated SIM card slot. 2. Turn the Bee on 3. Connect the app with the Bee - leave it connected for 5-10 seconds. 4. If successful, a pop-up should appear stating “Now mapping with LTE”. 5. Reboot the Bee. The pop up notification will only appear once after the initial authentication. ### [](#id-2.-app-based-upload) **2\. App Based Upload** The Bee Maps app can be used to upload mapping data captured by the Bee to the Hivemapper Network. When using this method, the Bee Maps app acts as a bridge between your Bee device and the Hivemapper Network. To use this method, your mobile device must have cellular data or Wi-Fi and the Bee Maps app installed. To upload via the Bee Maps app: 1. Connect to your Bee’s Wi-Fi network using the Bee Maps app. 2. Once connected, the app will begin downloading collected data from your Bee to your mobile device. 3. By default, the app will wait for a trusted Wi-Fi network (like your home or office) to begin uploading to the Hivemapper Network. Uploads happen automatically in the background. 1. To upload using cellular data, enable the option in the Bee Maps app > Settings > App You can continue using your phone normally during this process. #### [](#how-to-monitor-data-transfer-process) How to monitor Data Transfer Process? This guide provides instructions to create a Hivemapper Guild: * Add contributors to your Guild * Adjust token splits * Manage access to locked dashcams for Guild members. Anyone can create a Hivemapper Guild with the app. Guilds come in all sizes, from Micro to Enterprise, and play an important role in making Hivemapper’s more comprehensive and valuable. A Guild is created when you add a driver to it. Once a driver has been imported to your Guild, Hivemapper then tags your Solana address as a Guild manager. This Solana address is the designated owner of the Guild, and will always have complete control over this Guild. [Guild Management](https://hivemapper.com/fleet-management) [decentralized mapping network](/welcome/network-governance/open-camera) --- # Access Control List | Hivemapper Docs [PreviousToken Splits](/contribute/driving/fleets/token-splits) [NextGiving Access to Locked Dashcams](/contribute/driving/fleets/giving-access-to-locked-dashcams) Last updated 7 months ago The Access Control List (“ACL”) is a list of Solana addresses that can be granted access to contribute with any of the locked dashcams in your Guild. The main reason for locking access is to ensure that a driver does not use their own account to earn HONEY rewards while using your dashcam, as well as to deter theft (as a thief would not be able to use a locked dashcam). #### [](#creating-an-acl) Creating an ACL Within the Guild dashboard, you can select any or all members you’d like to add to your ACL. At the moment, only the Guild owner is able to modify the ACL. **Adding an ACL to a Dashcam** To add the ACL to a dashcam, you must connect a mobile phone with your Hivemapper Guild owner account to the dashcam you’d like to lock. Soon, any account that has been set as a Manager within the Guild can do this. After signing in to Hivemapper Companion app, you should see that your account is designated as a “Fleet Manager.” You'll then be able to toggle to lock/unlock the dashcam. When selecting to lock the dashcam, the app will pull the ACL in its _current state_ from the Guild Management dashboard and write it to the dashcam. This means that if you were to add a new member to your Guild after this has been done, the new address **WILL NOT** be added to the dashcam's ACL and that new member will not have access to your dashcam. You may potentially receive an error requesting you to refresh your connection to lock/unlock the dashcam. This happens when your connection to Phantom needs to be refreshed. To resolve this, simply press the Refresh button and re-authenticate with Phantom to gain access to the Lock Dashcam toggle. #### [](#modifying-the-acl-on-a-dashcam) Modifying the ACL on a Dashcam To modify the ACL on a dashcam, you’ll first need to set the desired access for your members in the Guild Management dashboard. To do this, simply check the boxes for the accounts you want to add. Then connect a mobile phone to the dashcam with the Guild owner’s Hivemapper account and proceed with locking the dashcam from the Settings tab of the Hivemapper app. The ACL that is already written on the dashcam will contain the list of managers and drivers that were set on the Guild _at the time when it was loaded onto the dashcam_. This means that if a driver has been promoted to manager within your Guild after the ACL was loaded to the dashcam, they **will not** be able to modify the ACL (only those listed as managers at that point would have access). Lastly, if you unlock and then re-lock the dashcam, the new ACL will be retrieved from the Guild Management dashboard and loaded onto the dashcam. **Removing the ACL from a Dashcam** To remove the ACL from a dashcam, you’ll need to connect the Guild owner’s mobile phone to the dashcam. On the Settings tab of the Hivemapper app, toggle “Lock Dashcam” to be in an unlocked state. This allows the dashcam to be freely usable by anyone who connects to it. Remote locking is coming soon, so that Guild owners don’t need to be physically present for updating the ACL on their dashcams. ![](https://docs.hivemapper.com/~gitbook/image?url=https%3A%2F%2F2431105632-files.gitbook.io%2F%7E%2Ffiles%2Fv0%2Fb%2Fgitbook-x-prod.appspot.com%2Fo%2Fspaces%252FriJnVBjD2PUouCQhWbLM%252Fuploads%252FscR6Rh5krvlZ5jGU3UWn%252Fspaces_p6Fo2aFLV8cpAfB2YjTP_uploads_k5UPLuO4mR7DTbyqhR62_1-phone-m-lock-toggle.webp%3Falt%3Dmedia%26token%3D5f298a06-acfc-42dc-9bd6-8f364259f023&width=768&dpr=4&quality=100&sign=f28843e0&sv=2) ![](https://docs.hivemapper.com/~gitbook/image?url=https%3A%2F%2F2431105632-files.gitbook.io%2F%7E%2Ffiles%2Fv0%2Fb%2Fgitbook-x-prod.appspot.com%2Fo%2Fspaces%252FriJnVBjD2PUouCQhWbLM%252Fuploads%252FQjAfGXlUkAwrOOiCCTCI%252F3.png%3Falt%3Dmedia%26token%3D44eed90c-b699-41e7-92a6-dc55a16a1ef4&width=768&dpr=4&quality=100&sign=76d0cd2f&sv=2) --- # Authorized Resellers | Hivemapper Docs [PreviousHivemapper Guild Resources](/contribute/driving/fleets/hivemapper-guild-resources) [NextAccessories](/contribute/driving/accessories) Last updated 6 months ago Hivemapper Inc. has partnerships with resellers around the world to deliver a quick and convenient buying experience. Roads are built. Speed limit signs are changed. Even the natural landscape changes; floods and landslides regularly change how people navigate the world. Dashcams are the eyes that allow the Hivemapper Network to sense those changes. But as with human cognition, eyes are not enough. You need a brain. Map AI is the brain of the Hivemapper Network, extracting high-quality map data from images to help build fresher maps. * Hivemapper's Map AI algorithms automatically detect objects, such as speed limit signs, stop signs and traffic signals, and then position those objects on the map. Check out this blog series to learn more about Map AI: [](#who-are-ai-trainers) Who Are AI Trainers? -------------------------------------------------- People who help improve Map AI are known as AI Trainers. Anybody with an internet connection can get started without permission or formal training. We typically see a few types of contributors: * **Microtaskers**: people who perform tasks for Amazon Mechanical Turk or Remotasks may find similarities in the work required for AI Training. These people often play the trainer games accurately and proficiently for long stretches of time in order to maximize their rewards. * **Dashcam contributors**: people who primarily contribute and earn rewards by collecting images often squeeze AI Training into free moments throughout their day to help the network succeed. * **Casual gamers and map enthusiasts**: people who enjoy games such as GeoGuessr and people who just love maps often find Hivemapper's trainer games to be a fun way to build a new type of map. It doesn't hurt they also earn HONEY rewards. [](#how-can-i-get-started) How Can I Get Started? ------------------------------------------------------ 2. Click the "Connect Wallet" button; this is required to earn rewards. If you are on a mobile device, tap the menu icon first and then the Connect Wallet button. 3. Sign in using Phantom or Breeze. Auditing map data and training the Map AI is a complicated job, but Hivemapper has broken this work into simple, bite-sized tasks to allow anyone to participate. Each task focuses on a category of object that is important for mapmaking, such as speed signs, stop signs or roadwork zones. The types of tasks will evolve over time based on the needs of the Map AI and map data customers. Over time, Map AI will be capable of handling more and more tasks entirely on its own, allowing AI Trainers to focus on tasks where human input is still needed. [](#what-types-of-tasks-are-there) What Types of Tasks Are There? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- There are a few different types of tasks that AI Trainers can do to teach the Map AI. Type of Game Description Objective Skill Level Examples Identify Look at a mosaic and select all of the objects that meet the criteria Teach the Map AI to correctly detect objects Beginner Stop Sign, Traffic Light, No Turns 1 Classify Select the correct attribute for an object from a list Teach the Map AI to correctly assign attributes Beginner to Intermediate Speed Limit, No Turns 2, Highway Exit Info Merge Confirm whether two or more objects are the same exact object Teach the Map AI to correctly merge objects seen more than once Beginner to Intermediate Merge Image QA Determine whether images meet quality criteria Teach the Map AI to detect poor mounts and image quality Intermediate Dashcam Tilt Position Confirm or update the positioning and/or orientation of an object Teach the Map AI to position and orient objects in physical space Advanced Position, Azimuth [](#ai-trainer-reputation) AI Trainer Reputation ----------------------------------------------------- Some tasks require more skill than others. To ensure that skilled tasks are completed by skilled reviewers, the Hivemapper Network assigns a reputation score to each AI Trainer and sets a reputation threshold for each type of task. * Reputation is updated as Trainers complete tasks over time. * A good reputation is hard to build and easy to lose. * To access the most challenging and rewarding games, you need to be a 4-star AI Trainer or above. Hivemapper has no tolerance for Trainers acting in bad faith and will aggressively protect the network against them. [](#earning-rewards) Earning Rewards ----------------------------------------- AI Trainer reward amounts are subject to change and rewards are not guaranteed for Trainers who do not maintain a high reputation. Each type of task has a weighting that is determined based on how long it takes to complete and the skill level required. More complex and more time consuming tasks receive higher rewards, incentivizing the most skilled AI Trainers to focus on tasks that have the greatest value for the map. [](#need-help) Need Help? ------------------------------ Hivemapper's community of human reviewers, known as "AI Trainers," complete bite-sized to audit the outputs of these algorithms to ensure the data are accurate. The results of these tasks are used for , refining the algorithms to do a better and better job of identifying objects and placing them in the world. Visit from any desktop or mobile device. Go to the and choose a task. AI Trainers share a weekly pool of rewards for their contributions. The rewards pool is divided among AI Trainers based on how many tasks they completed of each type, weighted by a reputation score that reflects the quality of their work. Reward weights are shown for each game on the, and are subject to change. Rewards are processed based on the weighting points the game had when you submitted reviews for the game.
