Thanks to web 3.0 technology powered by the Hive blockchain, each card in Splinterlands is a non-fungible token (NFT) owned by a player. That means players can do anything they want with their cards, including battling for rewards, holding them as collectibles, trading on the peer-to-peer market, combining to level up, or even _burning_ to obtain or . The game was founded by blockchain innovators who shared a mutual frustration with mainstream digital trading card games that stemmed from players losing ownership of their assets when trading card games went digital. The companies who actually own the cards that players are supposed to "own" themselves can withhold information, reprint cards as often as they'd like, or even wholly delete a player's collection based on inactivity or a violation of terms. Through the power of blockchain, Splinterlands solves these problems by making digital trading cards transparent, scarce, and actually _owned_ by the players who own them. With hundreds of unique cards, Splinterlands is a brilliantly designed and fast-paced trading card game that allows its players to _earn by playing (P2E)._ Unlike more traditional TCGs like Magic: The Gathering, and Pokemon, Splinterlands battles are fast, with each match taking only 2-3 minutes. Rather than turn-based action in which every move is carefully and slowly controlled, Splinterlands' main mechanic is a _drafting_ style. Once an opponent is found, each player assembles a team of up to 6 cards from their Splinterlands collection. Then according to a unique set of rules that make every match different, the battle is played out automatically in a quick, action-packed format that allows players to learn from both victory and defeat. Splinterlands is a strategist's dream, beloved by one of the largest and most loyal followings in the play-to-earn industry. It is translated into nearly a dozen languages and played in over 100 countries worldwide. Each day, thousands of cards are traded for thousands of dollars on the . While engaging in tournaments it is important to know that some factors are determined by the Tournament Mode selection **(Modern or Wild):** * A player's Collection Power entry requirements take Modern or Wild into account (i.e. for Modern tournaments, only Modern cards will contribute to the Collection Power entry requirement). * Gladiator cards and cards staked on land no longer count toward Collection Power for tournament entry requirements. * Discounted entry fees take into account whether a tournament is Modern or Wild (i.e. for Modern tournaments the discounted fee is based on a player’s Modern league, and for Wild tournaments, the discounted fee is based on a player’s Wild league). [](#different-tournament-modes) Different Tournament Modes --------------------------------------------------------------- ### [](#modern-and-wild-tournaments) Modern & Wild Tournaments: As with Ranked play, Wild tournaments allow you to use all cards (subject to edition restrictions placed on a given tournament of course), and Modern tournaments only allow the use of Modern cards (an additional constraint in addition to any specific edition restrictions). On the Tournaments List screen you will be able to filter by the tournament mode: ### [](#splinterlands-open-tournaments) Splinterlands Open Tournaments Splinterlands Open tournaments rely on skill rather than playable cards in a user's collection. At the beginning of each Splinterlands open tournament, all participants will be given a complete set of cards to use based on the tournament’s series, league, and foil giving each participant an equal playing field. This means that all participants will have access to the same card selection. These Decks will be built off of the selection of playable sets and their levels as determined by the Tournament League. This can include tournaments focused around high-level/expensive decks, specific tournament levels (bronze, silver, gold, etc.), gold foil, etc regardless of rank, any battle mage may compete. [](#different-types-of-tournaments) Different Types of Tournaments ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Tournament modes can be applied to any of the following tournament types: ### [](#anytime-tournaments) Anytime Tournaments These tournaments are the most popular style of Splinterlands tournament. They allow players to select and submit their teams whenever it is convenient for them. Depending on how many players are involved in the tournament, there are a set number of rounds. During each round of the tournament, each player submits the required number of battles. Then when the round is over and all battles have been submitted, tournament players are ranked based on the results and a certain portion of players go on to the next round. To participate in an anytime tournament, you must be registered for the tournament by its scheduled starting time. Battles not submitted are automatically counted as losses. ### [](#single-elimination) Single Elimination _Live_ tournaments are original-style Splinterlands tournaments based on elimination and bracketing. These can be hosted through the official Splinterlands tournament interface or externally using the Challenge option and organized manually. For Single Elimination tournaments, players must not only be registered but _checked in_ before the start of the event to be eligible to participate. A player must also have at least 1 summoner and 6 monsters from the eligible cards to be able to enter a particular tournament. (This applies to both Modern & Wild mode tournaments.) In some cases, there are additional requirements, such as completion of a prerequisite or presence in a designated Discord server. ### [](#sit-and-go-tournaments) Sit-and-Go Tournaments In Sit-and-Go Splinterlands tournaments, the tournament begins immediately once the target number of participating players has been reached, rather than at a pre-determined fixed time. These tournaments are typically for a small number of players and do not last long. [](#creating-a-tournament) Creating a Tournament ----------------------------------------------------- The create-your-own tournament interface makes it simple to promote your project, product, or brand to Splinterlands players. You can offer Booster Packs or Dark Energy Crystals but also have the option to include _custom_ prizes of your choice. Tournament creators will be required to select the Game Mode option to specify if a tournament should be Modern or Wild (it **must** be one or the other) as well as all other tournament options including the edition restrictions, gold foil, or not, etc. Note: Only ‘Whitelisted’ Splinterlands staff are able to create Splinterlands Open Tournaments. Drafting a team is the basic mechanic of battling in Splinterlands. Players have a limited time to create a team from their card collection, then that team is sent to battle against an opponent's team. The battle process begins when you select the Battle Format that you would like to participate in on the , you can choose between the battle formats. Once you have made your selection, you can proceed by clicking on **Battle.** First, you will have to wait a few moments as an appropriate opponent is found. Then you will be presented with a _Match Begins_ screen that displays a countdown, the restrictions and rules of the battle, and your opponent's recent battle history. If you have selected the **Wild** battle format you will be matched with an opponent who has made the same selection, and only **Wild battles** will appear on their recently played teams display, the same applies to the **Modern** battle format**,** If you have selected the **Modern** battle format you will be matched with an opponent who has made the same selection, and only **Modern battles** will appear on their recently played teams display. The clock is already ticking, so after glancing at this information, accept the battle by clicking **Create Team** and you will be brought to the page where you will draft your team. Once the drafting page appears, you'll see several things, as pictured below (for this example we have used the **Modern** battle format). On the left is your team line-up that is initially empty. On the top, you'll see the countdown timer, as well as restrictions and rulesets for the battle, and the allowed Elements. Just below are various filtration tools that will enable you to quickly sort through your collection and find the cards that you're looking for. Finally, you'll see your playable Summoners for this battle. You must choose one to determine the units from which you can draft the rest of your lineup. #### [](#picking-a-summoner) **Picking A Summoner** Pick a Summoner and it will fill the left **YOUR SUMMONER** space. The cards that can be summoned by that Summoner will then appear on the screen. **Standard summoners** allow you to play with a single element and when you select it you will immediately see the cards available to choose from that element. If you pick Kelya Frendul then you will see all available Water + Neutral cards (in this case you can also see Gladiator cards because of the ruleset) The exceptions in the Standard Summoners are those of the Dragon Element, where you can choose an extra element among those available and you can see the Dragon cards + the chosen element. Pick Quix The Devious + Another Element. ### [](#dual-element-summoners) **Dual Element Summoners** Dual Element Summoners were introduced with Rebellion Set and they allow you to play with a 2 elements (you can see both elements colors in the Card Background and the icons in the top right for the Rebellion Set) and when you select it you will immediately see the cards available to choose from that element. If you pick Prunda Undervesch then you will see all available Life + Water + Neutral cards available (in this case you can see also Gladiator cards because of the ruleset) ### [](#tactic-summoners) **Tactic Summoners** [](#picking-units) Picking Units ------------------------------------- One by one, pick cards to place them in the **YOUR UNITS** column. The total mana of your team must fall within the mana cap that is listed above your lineup. You can rearrange the order of the team after picking units by dragging their name to the desired slot in the **YOUR UNITS** column. When selecting your battle cards, please keep in mind that the use of starter cards (available only in Modern gameplay) can affect your earning potential. That's it! You have until the timer runs out to select your cards and click **BATTLE** to submit your team. ### [](#watching-the-battle) Watching the Battle If you have submitted your team before your opponent has submitted theirs, you'll need to wait until they are ready. Once both players have submitted their teams you’ll be taken to the Battle screen. First, your opponent will be displayed, then the battlefield will be organized with the teams you have both submitted and the details of the battle. Once you click the **Battle** button, the battle will begin. You can control the battle's speed by clicking the speed button. The battle speed you select will be remembered for the next battle. You can also go back and begin the battle over, or skip to the results screen if you just can't wait to see who won. Once you have submitted your team for battle, you can watch the battle whenever you're ready, or not at all. The timed portion of the battle is done once your team has been submitted, and the battle itself is technically a _replay_ of the battle even the first time you watch it. While watching the battle is not part of the requirements for playing the game, it is highly recommended as you can learn a lot from doing so. **Be sure to Check out these amazing articles for a more in-depth look at some of the game mechanics that can give you the upper hand when drafting a team:** There are 3 different summoners in-game: Standard Summoners, Dual Element Summoners and Tactic Summoners. The image below displays cards playable in the Modern battle format, If you have selected the Wild battle format, the available card selection may vary. In Splinterlands, there are two different formats for ranked gameplay: Wild Ranked Battles & Modern Ranked Battles. Although the gameplay mechanics do not vary between formats, the cards available to play within each format differ. Wild format allows all cards to be used, Modern format is limited to the two more recent sets. By splitting Splinterlands Gameplay into two formats, players may select the most appropriate format for their card collection. * _Review_ _for additional details._ ### [](#playable-cards) Playable Cards **Format** **Cards Allowed** **Wild** **Alpha Set:** Alpha Core + Promo cards **Beta Set:** Beta Core+ Promo cards + Reward cards + Essence Orbs miniset **Untamed Set:** Untamed Core+ Promo cards + Reward cards+ Azmaré Dice miniset **Chaos Legion Set:** Chaos Legion Core + Promo cards + Reward Cards + Riftwatchers miniset **Rebellion Set:** Rebellion + Promo cards. _Reward cards and mini-sets pending._ **Modern** **Chaos Legion Set:** Chaos Legion Core + Promo cards + Reward Cards + Riftwatchers miniset **Rebellion Set:** Rebellion + Promo cards. _Reward cards and mini-sets pending._ ### [](#card-frames) Card Frames With so many cards and sets, telling them apart can be daunting. Thankfully, each set and the associated reward and promo cards possess a unique frame. Eventually, you will be able to distinguish between cards from various sets at a glance. ### [](#battle-format) Battle Format Players who own or rent newer cards might prefer the Modern format. As only cards from more recent editions are playable in this format, players don’t need to worry about competing against older cards that may be difficult to acquire due to scarcity. This makes gameplay more fair for newer players by providing a level playing field. On the other hand, veteran players with a more diverse collection that may include Alpha & Beta cards may enjoy playing in the Wild format, where all cards from all sets are playable. Balancing strategies across a wide selection of cards can provide a unique set of challenges for Wild players. Of course, players are free to choose whichever format best fits their card collection & play style and can toggle between one format and the other whenever they want. ### [](#rewards) Rewards ### [](#display) Display On all game screens that show player avatars, the avatar frame will be colored depending on the player’s highest current league between the Modern & Wild formats. Example: If a player is Bronze II in Modern but Silver III in Wild, they will have the Silver avatar frame. The one exception to this rule is the Battle History screen, which shows avatar frames based on whether the screen is toggled to look at Modern data or Wild data: _View the various sets by_ _within the_ _**.**_ can be earned by playing in Modern and Wild battle formats, thus allowing players to earn from either format. Splinterlands' Leagues, ranging from Novice to Champion, are a visual indicator of the rating range that a player is currently in. As of the , players do not choose to advance or remain within a league; as rating increases, a player’s league will reflect the range they’re in. ### [](#how-leagues-affect-general-gameplay) How Leagues affect general gameplay: * To earn , you must _be at least Bronze III in either the Modern or Wild format_. For example, you can be Novice in Wild and Bronze III in Modern, and then you will be able to earn rewards from Modern battles, but not Wild battles. * Each player can potentially earn more and rewards by playing in higher leagues. * The end-of-season rating reset will continue to work as it does now, with the reset applied separately to your Modern & Wild leagues. ### [](#leagues-of-splinterlands) Leagues of Splinterlands The 6 Leagues of Splinterlands cover a wide range of collections, experience, and skills. A brand new player in their first week will find themselves in the Novice and Bronze Leagues, while the most experienced players battle it out each Season for the coveted League of Champion I. As of the , there are no limits on card level maximums outside of what Summoner’s themselves limit, meaning a player can use higher level cards in lower leagues. This will cause them to advance quickly, until they reach a rating where their current cards are the most competitive. Rewards increase as players move higher up in Leagues, as does the complexity of strategies used and the difficulty of the competition. * * * [](#advancing-in-leagues-tiers) Advancing in Leagues/Tiers --------------------------------------------------------------- Additionally, you will receive rewards the first time each season you reach a new league tier. These rewards increase with each league level. _(Note: the examples below show Modern Leagues, Wild Leagues will be identical)_ [](#wood) Wood ------------------- The Wood League is the starting place for every new account. Every battle in this League is given the Standard ruleset alone. To earn Season rewards, a player must rise above the Wood League. Once a player has advanced from Wood league they are unable to go back. [](#bronze) Bronze ----------------------- Bronze is the first League that implements rulesets. In the Bronze League, players start earning Glint and SPS rewards. Earnings are low as it is the lowest league to play in. [](#silver) Silver ----------------------- The Silver League is one of the most played entry-level leagues, with Glint and SPS earnings slightly higher. [](#gold) Gold ------------------- The Gold League concentrates the mid-level players, with a fairly balanced investment and earnings ratio. [](#diamond) Diamond ------------------------- In the Diamond League you can find the best players trying to rise to glory. [](#champion) Champion --------------------------- In the Champions League you can get the best players, and the top 50 receive rewards in DEC tokens. Here all the rulesets are available and the Glint and SPS profits are the best. Card Rarities determine how likely a certain card is to be found in a Booster Pack or Loot Chest. The rarity, along with the set, determines how many copies need to be combined to level up a card to reach its Maximum Potential. ### [](#legendary) Legendary Rimmed with gold before being revealed, Legendary cards are the rarest in Splinterlands, with the lowest total supply per card. In Booster Packs, the normal chance of revealing a Legendary is 0.8%, but this chance can be doubled to 1.6% by using a **Legendary Potion** charge. Your chances of finding a Legendary Reward Card in a Card Containing **Loot Chest:** **Bronze** Loot Chest: 0.2% chance. **Silver** Loot Chest: 0.8% chance. **Gold** Loot Chest: 1.2% chance. **Diamond** Loot Chest: 1.6% chance, **Champion** Loot Chest: 3.2% chance. ### [](#epic) Epic Rimmed with purple before being revealed, Epic cards are the second most rare type of card in Splinterlands. In Booster Packs, the chance of revealing an Epic card is 4.8%. The 4.8% chance is the same whenever a card is found inside a Loot Chest. ### [](#rare) Rare Rare cards are rimmed with blue before being revealed. At least one card that is _Rare or better_ is guaranteed in every Booster Pack. The chance is revealing a Rare card when opening Booster Packs and card-containing Loot Chests is 24.8%. ### [](#common) Common Common cards are found 69.6% of the time when a card is revealed in a **Booster Pack** (or 68.8% with Legendary potions). Your chances of finding a Common Reward Card in a Card Containing **Loot Chest**: **Bronze** Loot Chest: 70.2% chance. **Silver** Loot Chest: 69.6% chance. **Gold** Loot Chest: 69.2% chance. **Diamond** Loot Chest: 68.8% chance, **Champion** Loot Chest: 67.2% chance. ![](https://docs.splinterlands.com/~gitbook/image?url=https%3A%2F%2F1865200006-files.gitbook.io%2F%7E%2Ffiles%2Fv0%2Fb%2Fgitbook-x-prod.appspot.com%2Fo%2Fspaces%252F-MTqLt1UcMaV6ezLJUdy%252Fuploads%252FV2NBPoOGFs88Tqs0Ybh1%252Fimage.png%3Falt%3Dmedia%26token%3De9a54883-4b08-437e-8b9e-23f7137a4967&width=768&dpr=4&quality=100&sign=b19e3a00&sv=2) ![](https://docs.splinterlands.com/~gitbook/image?url=https%3A%2F%2F1865200006-files.gitbook.io%2F%7E%2Ffiles%2Fv0%2Fb%2Fgitbook-x-prod.appspot.com%2Fo%2Fspaces%252F-MTqLt1UcMaV6ezLJUdy%252Fuploads%252FafKX718DouVGYCqfW2ya%252Fimage.png%3Falt%3Dmedia%26token%3D684a29f9-0f72-4704-b7ef-8796b58cbfdf&width=768&dpr=4&quality=100&sign=e9ecdfd2&sv=2) ![](https://docs.splinterlands.com/~gitbook/image?url=https%3A%2F%2F1865200006-files.gitbook.io%2F%7E%2Ffiles%2Fv0%2Fb%2Fgitbook-x-prod.appspot.com%2Fo%2Fspaces%252F-MTqLt1UcMaV6ezLJUdy%252Fuploads%252FGZFajZSgF4uFYTWTFW7d%252Fimage.png%3Falt%3Dmedia%26token%3D758ab998-c9f2-49f2-948a-1413595e1244&width=768&dpr=4&quality=100&sign=1c14df6d&sv=2) ![](https://docs.splinterlands.com/~gitbook/image?url=https%3A%2F%2F1865200006-files.gitbook.io%2F%7E%2Ffiles%2Fv0%2Fb%2Fgitbook-x-prod.appspot.com%2Fo%2Fspaces%252F-MTqLt1UcMaV6ezLJUdy%252Fuploads%252FLb64ZGQ0HpeWe8IGDWxv%252Fimage.png%3Falt%3Dmedia%26token%3D77a79fb5-0f1a-497c-8663-a61c8455b50d&width=768&dpr=4&quality=100&sign=8fedac78&sv=2) --- # Burning Cards | Splinterlands [PreviousCombining Cards](/cards/combining-cards) [NextCard Stats](/cards/card-stats) Last updated 2 months ago Was this helpful? Cards within Splinterlands can be “Tradable” or “Soulbound”, which will affect various things about their use outside of battles, including what token the card can be burned for. Burning means the card will be destroyed, and permanently removed from circulation. Tradable cards consist of any cards that can be transferred, sold, rented, or burned for DEC. These can be obtained via booster packs (for any of the various sets) or purchased via the card market. Soulbound cards consist of any cards that are bound to the owner’s account, and cannot be transferred, sold, rented, or burned for DEC (though they can be burned for GLINT or MERITS). These can be obtained as rewards in loot chests and rarity draws via GWEN'S GLINT SHOP, as well as Gladius Cases via the GUILD STORE. Gladiator cards from Gladius cases are burnable for Merits. As you can see, depending on the type of card, the token they can be burned for will vary. The details are listed below. ### [](#burning-cards-to-get-dec-tokens) Burning Cards to Get DEC Tokens **The** **DEC burn value** **of a card can be found within the details for a specific card, in the Power column on the right-hand side of the screen. Only tradable (non-Soulbound) cards can be burned for DEC. Click on any card on your Items page, then make sure the “Cards” tab is selected, as seen below:** Card burn values are based on several factors: * BCX * Rarity * Set * Foil * Card Level (Burning Max or over-max level cards earn an additional 5% burn bonus.) The DEC burn value of a card is also equivalent to its Collection Power value. The DEC burn value is always displayed next to the cards you own on the Collection page. If you do not own a certain card, you can also use the following chart to determine the DEC burn value. ### [](#burning-cards-to-get-glint) Burning Cards to Get GLINT **The** **GLINT burn value** **of a card can be determined by multiplying the Power value of a card by 5. Soulbound Reward cards can be burned for GLINT. To see a card’s Power, click on any Soulbound Reward card on your Items page, then make sure the “Cards” tab is selected, as seen below:** Card burn values for GLINT are based on the same factors as DEC burning; If you do not own a certain card you can use the following chart below to determine the GLINT burn value: ### [](#burning-cards-to-get-merits) Burning Cards to get MERITS **The** **MERIT burn value** **of a card can be found within the details for a specific card, in the Power column on the right-hand side of the screen.
