You can open up Player Packs using Tournament Points. There's 3 tiers of packs available to open: 1. **Pro Pack:** Smaller amount of shares per player 2. **Epic Pack:** Medium amount of shares per player 3. **Legendary Pack:** Large amount of shares per player The cost of a pack is dynamically determined at the start of each tournament. This is to ensure that the distribution of players into the ecosystem aligns nicely with the earning of Tournament Points. Your packs available will recharge every 4 hours, till you reach a maximum of 2 packs. Your Pack Balance can go above 2 if you're awarded packs from other means, such as objectives or tournament rewards. However there is also variable fee structures in place for 2 scenarios. 1. Slippage is when the price changes between the moment you press to start a trade and when the trade actually goes through. You can adjust the slippage as you like. But if the price goes out of that range before your trade completes, it will revert the trade. **Example:** You see 100 gold = 1,000 shares of Bellingham. With 10% slippage, you're saying "I'm okay with paying as high as 110 gold (10% extra) for those 1,000 if the price is moving whilst my trade is still finishing" And in this scenario if the price changes more than 10% (anything above 110 gold) the trade will not go through. Shares that are in contract earn rewards for you in tournaments. If your players shares contract expires to 0, the player will not be entered into the upcoming tournament for you and is not eligible to win you rewards. You can extend contracts through your squad page **or** by purchasing more shares in a player. Contracts only get used if a player in your squad enters the pitch in real life. Goals, Assists and Clean Sheets are crucial, however so is a strong overall contribution to the game. Just pick players who excel in their role in real life to win. You do not need to overthink it - if fans applaud it, the player probably got points for it. But if they make mistakes they may struggle to get big points totals, even if they get a clean sheet. **Defenders** who get a clean sheet and make a lot of tackles, interceptions whilst contributing to the build up play will usually perform better than a defender who got a clean sheet but otherwise had a quiet game. **Midfielders** are generally expected to make a strong overall contribution to the game whilst getting a goal and/or assist to excel. **Strikers** who score but also miss many big chances will get beaten by more clinical finishers. All players in your Active Squad with contracts take part in tournaments, there is no additional action to enter them into tournaments like setting a lineup in traditional fantasy. There’s 3 important things when it comes to tournament play. 1. Your current amount of shares of each player. The more shares you have, the more rewards you get when the player wins. 2. The total amount of active shares of each player in the tournament. The more widely owned a player is, the more people share the rewards. Therefore, the biggest wins are gained by picking unexpected or unknown players that win! 3. Player Performance. The top 5 scoring players in each outfield area of the pitch are rewarded at the end of tournaments. (Forwards, Midfielders, Defenders). The amount of rewards in a Tournament Reward pool is driven predominantly by the amount of volume traded on the platform. As more people play and trade, the reward pool grows. Each player in the winning places will have an amount of Tournament Points available as rewards, which is then divided by the amount of shares of the player active. Meaning if you hold 500 out of 1000 of the active shares for a player in rank 1, you will gain 50% of that prize. What this means is, it is better to win with players that are less popular! The fewer people who own them, the more rewards you get when they win. However there is no right or wrong way to play the game, nobody knows whether quietly holding the top players consistently or trading players chaotically is the best strategy yet, and they probably never will. You can see the amount of shares you hold, against the total shares and predicted amount of Tournament Points won in the Live Scores page during tournaments. Rewards - Distribution per place (as % of the Tournament Prize Pool). Rewards (DEF, MID, FWD) Rewards (GK) 1st - 10% 1st - 7% 2nd - 6% 2nd - 3% 3rd - 4% 3rd - 2% 4th - 2% 5th - 1% Tournament Rewards are distributed at 4PM UTC on the day after the last match. Example. [](https://football-fun.gitbook.io/wiki/getting-started/how-fdf-works/skill-rating-basic/skill-rating-advanced#tournament-score) Tournament Score ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TS is a measure of your efficiency in selecting high performing players in this particular Tournament: Only your top 11 Players Performance Points during a tournament count towards your TS score. This means you do not have to heavily optimise your squad for a particular tournament. If players don’t help your score, they don’t hurt it either. All your players will earn a Tournament Score, so players who finish 7th or 8th for example can make a good contribution to your score. However, players that finish in the top 5 get boosted. The boost applied is after the base score the player got: * 1st = ×2 * 2nd = ×1.5 * 3rd to 5th = ×1.25 Here's an example Tournament Squad + Adjusted Performance Points Player Performance Points Mbappe 200 1st x2 400 Haaland 150 2nd x1.5 225 Maguire 200 1st x2 400 Doué 125 3rd x1.25 156.25 Onana 100 3rd x1.25 125 Damsgaard 25 22nd None 25 Kepa 10 32nd None 10 **TOTAL:** **810** **1341.25** Players who are sold after they enter the pitch still count towards a user’s Adjusted Performance Points total. ### [](https://football-fun.gitbook.io/wiki/getting-started/how-fdf-works/skill-rating-basic/skill-rating-advanced#eligibility) Eligibility As mentioned above, the system is calculated on the top 11 performances in your squad. To count towards TS, the player you own shares in must: * Be in your Active Squad * Have an active contract before their match * Be held before they enter the pitch and actually play Any purchased player shares after kick off are excluded. You should aim to have **at least 5 contracted players in your squad.** If you are below this threshold, you still receive Tournament Score, but it will be scaled down by 0.5x. ### [](https://football-fun.gitbook.io/wiki/getting-started/how-fdf-works/skill-rating-basic/skill-rating-advanced#substitutions) Substitutions There was a dominant tactic during the beta of rotating and trading players in the middle of a tournament. We want to retain the essence, but also adjust it so there's still more skill to your decisions and can't just be a brute force play method. **You get 8 free subs per tournament** When trading a player that has already played before the tournament has ended, this event triggers and Skill Rating (SR) penalties start to apply: * 9-11 subs: SR x 0.9 * 12-14 subs: SR x 0.75 * 15+ subs: SR x0.3 Low volume trades <1% of your squad value will not trigger this event. Meaning micro sales of a player won't trigger a substitution. The key rules are: * Bottom 25% of users by Tournament Score are excluded * Skill Points is awarded based on: * Your Tournament Score of the total eligible players * Your gold commitment size (if you hold larger amounts of shares, you earn more SP for the picks than someone who had the same picks but smaller size) * You must have a minimum Squad Value of 100 gold Skill Points (SP) are a reward currency earned based on your performance TS each week. They can be spent to promote players from the Development Pool to your Main Squad, thereby making them eligible for Tournaments and tradable.. Example: Player A vs Player B * If _Player A_ has a squad of 5 players, and all 5 players was in the top 5 selections. * _Player A_ is seen as high skill. * They made less picks to hit good outcomes. * If _Player B_ has a squad of 50 players, and also had only 5 players in the top 5 selections. * _Player B_ is seen as less skilful than _Player A_. * They had more decisions not hit good outcomes. There’s a Trending section, Top Gainers section which gives a quick glance into who’s being traded the most at the moment of viewing. You can then see the overall player market, with each player's price, 24H price movement and a buy or sell option (if you own shares). When clicking on a player of your choice you then get a further breakdown into some player details. Including the players recent performances, and recent changes in price action. Here you will also have the option to buy or sell shares of the player you’re viewing. Inviting others to sign-up and play, can unlock rewards for yourself and the person you invited. Our containers would have wide spread liveness probe checks. This health check ensures that a container is healthy by our orchestration system. When containers are considered unhealthy, they get restarted. The combination of user growth + this issue we were seeing when under heavy load lead to our decision to do two things for launch day 7. 1. Increase api workload capacity by 20% 2. From your perspective, that looked like slow responses, timeouts, and failed trades. * 17:00 - launch is delayed. We were observing an increase in container restarts and massive load on database * 17:12 - Announcement is made to push back launch by 30 mins * 17:20 - Api health resumes. Team was unable to explain the huge spike in database re-use. We speculated that not showing the new players early in transfers list was resulting in people hitting refresh a lot, creating more and more demand on DB. Database load comes down and traffic spike levels out. * 17:30 - Players go live and we see massive spike in demand. Containers begin restarting constantly * 18:00 - Team identifies potential issue with readiness check. * 18:05 - Team applies patch to fdf-api deployment and starts roll out * 18:07 - Rollout of new api config is deployed across all replicas. (simplified) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Because of a **misconfigured health check.** * Kubernetes (our orchestration layer) checks each API server’s health to see if it’s alive. * We left the default **1-second timeout** in place. That meant if your API call took just over 1s (for example because of a busy database or network blip), Kubernetes assumed the whole container was dead. * As load spiked, some responses slipped past the 1s mark → probes failed → Kubernetes marked pods unhealthy → pods restarted → traffic shifted to fewer pods → **feedback loop of death** 💀 We were seeing a large number of trades go through the system during the period where service was unavailable, but it was a case of pot luck. If you’re requests landed on pods before too much traffic hit the pod and was marked unhealthy, your trades would make it through. * * * ### [](https://football-fun.gitbook.io/wiki/dev-updates/day-6-recap#the-fix) **The Fix** **Extended health check timeouts** from 1s → 5s, and adjusted failure thresholds so pods tolerate small hiccups without being killed. This change instantly resulted in a much more stable system under load. I believe that this issue had been present across all launches and is the reason we’d been seeing the spike in contain restart rates under load. (simplified) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Because of a **misconfigured health check.** * Kubernetes (our orchestration layer) checks each API server’s health to see if it’s alive. * We left the default **1-second timeout** in place. That meant if your API call took just over 1s (for example because of a busy database or network blip), Kubernetes assumed the whole container was dead. * As load spiked, some responses slipped past the 1s mark → probes failed → Kubernetes marked pods unhealthy → pods restarted → traffic shifted to fewer pods → **feedback loop of death** 💀 We were seeing a large number of trades go through the system during the period where service was unavailable, but it was a case of pot luck. If you’re requests landed on pods before too much traffic hit the pod and was marked unhealthy, your trades would make it through. * * * ### [](https://football-fun.gitbook.io/wiki/dev-updates#the-fix) **The Fix** **Extended health check timeouts** from 1s → 5s, and adjusted failure thresholds so pods tolerate small hiccups without being killed. This change instantly resulted in a much more stable system under load. I believe that this issue had been present across all launches and is the reason we’d been seeing the spike in contain restart rates under load.
